Gin teaches graphic design at a state college. As part of the school’s “art camp” curriculum last week, she taught visual communications and studio art majors how she uses Photoshop and Illustrator to produce TBG.

Check out these storyboards. They’re about two years old. They were pages 18, 19, 21, and 23 drawn somewhere around March 2010.

Page 18: Charlotte goes on about her ex boyfriends. Each one. In detail.
Page 19: Sam notices Adrianna at the bar. Makes get away.
Page 21: Charlotte makes victory speech
Page 23: Charlotte and Sam have an argument while Adrianna readies her attack

Originally, Detective Baker was not involved in this sequence. Charlotte drove the whole thing on her own. She’s a fun character to write because she spins her reality, however, the leaps in logic she had to make to get this sequence to work were too great for our test audience. So, we added Detective Baker as a stepping stone.

When one brings a detective into play one must embrace all the meanings and associations that come with him. The sequence had to change. So what was originally a story about Charlotte and the audience being betrayed by Sam the womanizer became Charlotte assisting and then assaulting Sam the thug and possible felon… in the end, far more fun to write.

Normally I don’t plan on sharing unused artwork the same day the page itself posts, but I really liked this one. Chris kicked butt on this sequence.

I had totally forgotten this image. It looks really good, but Ginger has stretched her skills far beyond it. I’m happy to be TBG’s penciller, but I’d like to see comics that are her art from start to finish.

At one point I was going to do the comic all on my own. I’m unashamed of the fact that I love illustrator. The whole thing woulda been in vector and I would have spent FOREVER. (edit: the whole thing IS in vector, I meant to say I woulda pen-tooled everything) This is a concept for Charlotte. CAN YOU IMAGINE TBG LIKE THIS?

But Chris insisted on being the artist. I’m glad he won that argument. He brings something to the table that I never could. Also, he’s a pretty cool guy to work with.

Contrast this with the way Charlotte ended up. She’s way better now.

Finals went live as pages 0036 and 0037 on February 7 and 14, 2012, respectively.

Woah now why have all the dates on the posts changed and they’re authored by Gin now?

No worries dude. I had to consolidate some bloggies and now Chris and I can use the TBG process blog as a group blog rather than just a user.

Basically it involved killing the old one and starting a new one.

Henceforth, less weirdness.
